Panguni (Twelvth and last Month) The Festivals in Panguni

Friends,
It is with a heavy heart (hand)that I sit down to type the last instalment of the ongoing series on Tamil month names and the respective festivals associated with each month. I never imagined when I started that this will evoke such overwhelming response from my readers, It has been a more than satisfactory journey for me and I hope you all enjoyed as much as I did. The amount of knowledge I gained researching for the series cannot be measured. I never ever imagined that so much reason was involved behind every festival we celebrate. I hope some knowledge has rubbed off on my readers.

The writing and research behind each instalment gave me immense confidence as a writer. I only hope I have not bored some of of you.

In any event/sport you do not expect the last man to perform exceptionally. Take cricket for example. You don't expect a Umesh Yadav or a Ashish Nehra to hit a century do you? Even the great Don Bradman scored a zero in his last innings bringing down his perfect average to 99.96!!!

As such Panguni (being the last month) also does not have many festivals like some  of the other months and as such comes below expectations. Being the last month like a twelvth man it does not have much to do.

I would now like to finish the task on hand by requesting your letting me know the honest opinion on whether I should continue blogging as a hobby or hang up my boots and shut up.

Panguni Uthiram – March 30

The Panguni Uthiram festival falls in the month 'Panguni' (March-April). This month is special because of the star 'Uthiram' and 'Pournami' occurring together. Besides, it is on "Panguni Pournami Uthiram" that the marriage of Parvati and Parameshwara, Muruga and Devasena, and Andal (also known as 'Kothai') and Rangamannar (also spelt as Rangamannar) took place.

Also, Valmiki's Ramayan (also spelt as Ramayana) says it is on this day and star that Sita's marriage with Rama was celebrated. From Brahmanda Purana one learns that on Panguni Uthiram every holy water joins Thumburu Teertha (also spelt as Tirtha), one of seven sacred tanks in Tirupati Tirumala.

Its Importance

The ancients chose Uthiram to convey to humans that it is for underlining the glory of Grahasta Dharma (married life) that the Almighty manifests in the marital state as Uma Maheshwara, Sita Rama, and Radha Krishna - despite his changelessness, sans childhood or youth or old age. The Lord is indeed a "Nitya Kalyana Murti". It is our duty to celebrate this day when the Lord, in both Shiva and Vishnu temples, appears to devotees in his married state.

On Panguni Uthiram, in all places where Lord Subramanya has a temple, his devotees carry in a Kavadi the requisites of puja for him, in fulfilment of vows. Such vow fulfilment by devotees carrying Kavadis is a special feature of Subrahmanya temples wherever they happen to be.

Devotees flock in hundreds to the Perur temple near Coimbatore during the Panguni Uthiram festival, which is celebrated in March every year.

Panguni Uthiram, or Paiguni Uttaram, is an important Tamil festival observed in the Tamil month of Panguni (March – April). In 2018, the date of Panguni Uthiram is March 30. Panguni Uttaram celebrates the wedding of important deities in the Hindu religion. The religious importance of the day is that the Uthiram Nakshatra (star) coincides with the full moon day (Poornima, or Purnima). The day is of great significance in majority of Hindu Temples in Tamil Nadu.

Divine Weddings on Panguni Uthiram

Hindu Scriptures like the Puranas and the two epics – Mahabharat and Ramayan – indicate that the auspicious day of Poornima and Uttiram star coinciding in the month of Panguni (March – April) is the day when most divine weddings had taken place.

Another important wedding that took place on Panguni Uthiram is the one between Andal and Sri Ranganatha (Lord Vishnu). This is known as Panguni Uthira Thirukkalyanam and is an important event in Srivilliputtur and neighboring areas.

Festival and Auspicious Day in Many Temples
Panguni Uthiram is the only one day in the year when we see the Goddess Ranganayaki with Srirangam Lord Ranganatha on the same stage. Lord Vishnu and Goddess Ranganayaki meet in the Panguni Uttara mandapam and this is known as the Panguni Uttaram Serththi (togetherness).

The day is also of great importance in all most all important Lord Vishnu, Shiva and Muruga temples in Tamil Nadu including the Thirupadagam Kanchipuram and the Sri Rangam Ranganatha Swamy Temple.Panguni Uthiram is a 10-day festival at the Palani Murugan Temple and is also the most important festival held here.

Devotees visiting various Muruga Temples on the day carry Kavadis.

Numerous temples in Tamil Nadu observe festivals during this period. The day is also of great importance at the Sabarimalai Ayyappa Temple in Kerala. Special pujas and rituals are held on the day.
